Douglas Bienert Photography | Portraits

School Picture Day! There is hardly a person in North America over the last century who has not participated in this yearly ritual. These images provide a simple year by year measuring stick of what you looked like every Autumn for twelve years. I still find them fun to look at now and then. These images often lacked a certain spark. They didn't portray much about me.

What makes a good portrait then? I came across an observation in a book of portraits by the famous Canadian portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh which I believe sums up the philosophy of my work:

"If it's a likeness, alone, it's not a success. If, through my portraits, you can come to know the subjects more meaningfully, if it synthesizes your feelings toward someone whose work has imprinted itself on your mind--if you see a photograph and say, 'Yes, this is the person,' with a little new insight--that is a beautiful experience."

This is true for my work regardless if I am creating a simple head and shoulders portrait in my studio or photographing in a personally meaningful environmental setting.

My portrait work begins at $150 for a head and shoulders studio image. Location portraits starts at $250 for a 2 hour session. A book of proofs is included as are web size images for sharing online.
